This 1947 Willys CJ2A is painted in commemoration of a jeep of General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army, 4th battalion, 37th armored regiment, which was the unit that broke through the German siege of Bastogne liberating the valiant defenders from the iron grip of the Nazis last major offensive of WWII now known as the Battle of the Bulge. General Patton’s 3rd army spearheaded an advance through the snow covered forest and icy grip of winter to liberate the defenders, who were completely surrounded and cut off from supplies.

This particular jeep was found mostly disassembled under a pile of leaves and other organic debris behind a shed in an old farmer’s orchard. It appeared to have sustained some kind of severe damage from below which dented the body (as found on the passenger side) and broke the original transmission housing (now replaced). The layers of muck were pretty thick. “Rat” had been carved into the steering wheel along with the initials of the owner and some friends. When it was being pressure washed out, a few actual dead rats were found. They were found while the jeep was being pressure washed and therefore ended up being displaced all over the carwash. Therefore, this jeep became “The Rat”.

It has less than 30 miles on a fully rebuilt engine, transmission, and transfer case. The brakes are also new; shoes, master and slave cylinders, and hard and flexible lines. The tires are new. All the seat cushions and soft top are new. The seat foam is a bit stiff still, it hasn’t been sat in much. There are new seals on the steering knuckles and front and rear differentials and axles. The dash instruments are new. However, the speedometer reads slow although it was supposed to be for this vehicle. The windshield is original, but the seal is new. The electric wiper motors are new aftermarket. Blinkers have been added. The starter motor is a high-torque gear motor, which is much better than the original, however it is wired to use the floor starter as it was from the factory. The radiator is new aftermarket. The wiring is new and a small fuse block has been added. This has a rebuilt solex carburetor which fired the essentially new engine right up after winter storage but tends to run a little rich.

As you can see from the photos, it isn’t really showroom quality and it has some rough spots, but that is just part of its character.
