Borrowing the CJ-6’s chassis helped created the Jeepster Commando in the late 1960s. This seldom-seen survivor truck remains in overall excellent shape.
Recently refinished in Torch Red with an Ivory White hardtop, the truck’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, the bodywork is straight and the engine bay is extremely tidy and the rear cargo area looks great, complete with full-size spare tire and matching interior cover. There are a pair of foglights (inop) above the chrome front bumper. You will be hard pressed to find a nicer restored Commando than this!
This Jeep rolls on American Classic wide whitewall tires, size 225/75R15 at all four corners. Each one is mounted to a steel wheel with locking hubs in front and full factory wheel covers. The wheel covers and tires are all in fine shape. This Jeepster has a 101-inch wheelbase and a 4,200 GVWR.
Under the hood is the Jeepster’s optional engine that year, the 225 CID “Dauntless” V-6 with a Rochester two-barrel carburetor (VIN code 7). If it looks familiar, it’s more or less the same Fireball V-6 engine Buick developed for its compact and mid-size cars in the early and mid-1960s before later selling the tooling to Kaiser-Jeep. A big difference is the much heavier flywheel Jeep used to dampen the engine’s vibrations from its firing pattern. Backing the engine is a Borg-Warner T-86 three-speed manual transmission and a 3.73:1 rear end. There’s a Dana Model 20 two-speed transfer case with a Dana 27 front axle and a Dana 44 rear axle.
